Background: The Rural Agricultural Finance Learning Lab (the Lab) is an initiative of The Mastercard Foundation implemented jointly by the Global Development Incubator (GDI) and Dalberg Advisors (Dalberg). GDI incubates and hosts innovative organizations and initiatives that can create large-scale change. Dalberg is a strategy and policy advisory firm exclusively dedicated to global development and innovation. The Lab is part of the Foundation’s financial inclusion portfolio, and is slated to run from 2015 to 2021. The Lab’s mission is to foster learning and collaboration among Foundation partners as well as the broader rural and agricultural finance (RAF) community to support innovation and scale up of financial services for rural customers (clients), in particular smallholder farmers. To accomplish this, the Lab: 1) collaborates with partners to maximize and capture key learnings, 2) conducts independent research to fill in key knowledge gaps, and 3) organizes workshops and provides virtual tools and spaces to facilitate learning and collaboration between sector players. These activities revolve around four key learning themes: client demand, delivery of financial services, ecosystem development and impact of financial services in smallholder livelihoods.

Position description:
The Learning Manager will be responsible for managing the learning functions of the Lab while providing support to the Lab’s partner engagements, research, knowledge sharing and day-to-day operations. The Learning Manager will report to the Director and coordinate closely with the Lab Manager, Lab Associate, and Communications Associate.


Partner learning

  • Lead the development and implementation of a new partner-led approach to learning under the guidance of the Director and in coordination with the Lab Manager
  • Collaborate with a design firm and 2-4 Lab partners to co-create a new partner led approach to learning using Human Centered Design
  • Work closely with the Lab’s partners to customize the learning approach to their needs and organize and lead trainings for the partners to implement the approach
  • Identify key learning themes that fit with the Lab’s learning agenda, and organize and lead learning workshops in collaboration with the Lab team to dive deeper into key topics
  • Manage the learning component of partner implementation plans and provide advisory support to partners in other relevant areas such as M&E, program evaluations, impact studies and applied research

Thought leadership 

  • Collect, synthesize and share learnings with the Lab’s partners, the Mastercard Foundation and the broader sector to advance the understanding of rural agricultural finance
  • Lead in drafting learning insight briefs (opportunistic) to explore specific learnings, and quarterly learning summaries that provide a portfolio birds-eye view that captures common learning themes, knowledge gaps and potential opportunities for collaboration
  • Work closely with the Lab’s Communications Associate to share learnings with the broader sector and public through blog posts, publications, infographics, videos, webinars, podcasts, Lab website, workshops, conferences and other channels
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with key information brokers to develop a thought leadership strategy to ensure key insights are shared with key stakeholders

Research and knowledge sharing

  • Support the Lab in identifying and prioritizing learning, research and collaboration opportunities • Facilitate learning and operational collaboration between partners by identifying and following up on specific opportunities
  • Support the Lab in implementing its research activities, including input on study scopes, data collection and interviews, and quantitative and qualitative analysis of data
  • Develop concepts notes and terms of reference for specific research efforts, acting as client to researchers • Lead expert interviews and partner organization meetings
  • Develop and deliver structured communications, especially reports and presentations • Write or source and review/edit articles for publication on and other channels
  • Present on Lab learnings at workshops, conferences and other public forums
  • Provide support in managing partner (e.g. RAF portfolio, FRP portfolio) and public gatherings, workshops and webinars

Strategy, planning, and operations

  • Work closely with the Lab team to ensure effective implementation of the Lab’s learning agenda

  • Support the Lab in periodically updating the Lab strategy and developing annual work plans and budgets

  • Provide input for semi-annual progress reports

  • Travel as needed to support partner learning activities, workshops, studies and other advisory activities

Desired qualifications:
We are looking for candidates with a mix of entrepreneurial, strategic, and operational experience; a strong understanding of evaluation and learning for the purpose of driving action; and the ability to navigate complex multi-stakeholder networks. We expect at least 5-10 years of professional experience in evaluation/applied research, management consulting or leadership within social impact organizations/programs; and demonstrated experience in management, operations, or implementation.

Preferred background includes:

  • Master’s Degree in international development, economics, finance, or business

  • Expertise in M&E, applied research and learning

  • Understanding of Human Centered Design

  • Experience working in multiple African countries

  • Agricultural development and/or financial inclusion sector expertise

  • Experience with management consulting and market study engagements

  • English (and if possible French as well)
